PREFACE
This is a new piece about Benjamin J Smith to replace an earlier piece in light of new evidence.
To avoid excessive use of terms like “allegedly”, it will be stated now - to every statement of fact written below, add “allegedly”, “supposedly”, “apparently” and so on.
INTRODUCTION
A woman was killed in a shooting in Portland, Oregon on February 19, 2022. 5 other people were shot and injured. There was more than 1 shooter. There was a march and a smaller group ahead of the march to stop traffic. It seems a man by the name of Benjamin J Smith confronted the smaller group and shot 5 people, killing 1 of them. Someone with the march shot Smith and seriously wounded him.
The woman who was killed is Brandy Knightly also known as June Knightly and T-Rex. It seems she was Antifa. This would unfortunately make her the 710th Antifa killed in America, at least in recent history. I go into more depth and detail about the incident and the social context thereof in my piece titled 10th Antifa Killed, Feb 19, 2022, Portland (in progress at the moment).
This piece will mainly look at this man’s social media content to gain insight onto his personality and politics. As we’ll see, much of it is almost certainly real content from Benjamin J Smith and some of it may not be real at all. We’ll also see that some of what people are saying about Smith’s content is taken out of context and deceptively so or just lied about.
I do not consider anything to be true that I can not prove for myself, nor would I ask you, dear reader, to believe what I write is true, especially since I suspend belief with regard to the claims of others. Anyone can claim anything about anything. But…
What does the evidence show?
SUMMARY - WHO IS BENJAMIN J SMITH?
From some reports and from the claims of many on social media, one might think that Smith is a far-right-wing, conservative, Christian man or that he recently became radicalized and/or switched from left-wing to right-wing. For example, the Oregonian reported that Smith’s roommate told them, “his politics had drastically shifted recently.”
We will see that this man was left-wing but more recently he has written that he is against “leftist religious zealotry”1 whether that means he rejects the left as a whole or just that aspect of it. Nor is he right-wing/conservative2 or Christian3. He sees himself as being against what he called “podunk america” and he wrote, “FUCK THIS WHOLE MOTHER FUCKING COUNTRY.”
I see no evidence that he became a patriotic American.
There is plenty of anti-authoritarian sentiment from him4, but he wrote very little that is directly political over the years5. As we’ll see, that he once made a post rejoicing about getting a job raising money for the Democrat party and the ACLU6, that he says he’s against censorship7 and that more recently he wrote that he is against Nazis and other kinds of socialists8, Antifa9, right-wingers and more. But it seems there’s not much more from him that is directly about politics.
There is much from him that is indirectly political. Culturally and socially, he is anything but conservative. He is an atheist of the sort that is aggressively against religion. He is openly gay10. He wrote about being in love with a particular man with whom he spent some time11. He says the LBGTQ community should reject religion12. He is or was a furry13 and more specifically a babyfur14. He’s open about wearing diapers and soiling them15 and about wearing panties16. He’s attended Burning Man17. He is open about having sex with used plushies from second-hand stores18.
Because of these qualities and more, socially speaking, he leans heavily towards what might be called progressive liberalism19, it seems. For example, in 2007 he wrote about wanting to move to Canada because it is so progressive. But then again, he is also very into guns, and politically incorrect20 His social media content from 2001 to the present at first shows the kind of person who would support left-wing organizations but also be politically incorrect and then, over time, shows an extremely politically incorrect person who is a lot more openly racist21 and who no longer sees himself as a left-winger, or at least he is not given over to “leftist religious zealotry”.
We’ll see him display malicious anger and nihilistic despair, what some call being black-pilled22. He’s long expressed violent and homicidal urges, suicidal ideation and other mental health issues23. We’ll see him celebrate violence and death24.
The sickness of Cain, the urge to hurt and kill, not to eat or for any natural reason, but driven by the pressure and heat of Hell made of the self.
Hate thy brother. Hate thyself.
Throw a fit against the world.
Lash out to damage life itself.
He fits the psychological profile of the most negative Antifa25. It is surprising that he did not take part in the “black bloc” for the opportunity to attack people and get away with it. He at least claims to have beaten up 2 “punks” though it was not entirely unprovoked26.
As we’ll see, he apparently hates himself27, hates Jews28 and enjoys posting racist comments. He claimed to be black29 but only once as far as I have seen and apparently it was only to troll someone. He does like to troll30. He seems to want to trigger negative reactions from anyone and everyone however he can. He derived sick pleasure from videos and reports of people shooting other people, a video of a dog being beaten to death31 and anything that might outrage others32. Unfortunately, he is also very into guns33. As we’ll see, he made posts about wanting to shoot people34 before he actually shot 5 people, killing 1 of them.
When I first started researching news and rumors of the incident on February 19, 2022, I neither believed nor disbelieved that the suspect in the killing, Benjamin Smith, was the person behind the social media content that was being circulated as his. As always, I did my own research and only after seeing the content for myself did I come to see that these different accounts on different platforms are from the same person and that the person in question is Benjamin J Smith. Of course, I do not expect you to believe me which is why I provide links/footnotes for everything.
The social media content shows an interest in bicycling35. Willamette Week published an article in 2005 about “zoobombers” who are a “self-described "anarchist" club” who gathered in Portland on bicycles for downhill “plummets each Sunday from the Oregon Zoo through Washington Park.” They quote one of these anarchist bicyclists as “Ben "Polyhead" Smith”.
Later we will see that in 2003, Polyhead on LiveJournal writes about riding his bike in that year’s zoobomb and we’ll see that in 2005, polyhead.net apparently used to feature photos of the “zoobomb” as well as photos of bikes, a photo of a bike (presumably Smith) with a bike and a categories for photos of BMX bikes and for “Cool bike events from 2005. Jousting, Polo, Bike fair, etc.”
We’ll see the profile for Polyhead on LiveJournal (spanning 2001-2011) has the location of Portland, OR and it links to Polyhead.net. It also shows an interest in bicycling. We’ll also be looking at Polybun on Reddit who will write “the name is Ben.. nice to meet you”.

As far as I am aware, the earliest case of someone naming Ben Smith as one of the shooters occurs in a tweet by @Johnnthelefty on February 21, 2022 at 5:01pmPST.
This is before the Oregonian or police named Smith. I do not know the source of the photo but as it will turn out, it actually is a photo of Smith. Note that @Johnnthelefty writes that Smith is 44 years old. According to what we will see below that would indicate that as I write this Smith would be 4336, not 44. The next day, @Johnnthelefty tweeted the following two photos…

It appears to show a post by someone going by “Polyhead” making reference to a polyhead engine (more properly called a polyspherical engine). As we’ll see, he’s very into cars, especially MOPARs37. It seems as if it’s the same car as the one he is posing behind in the photo above. Let’s have a closer look with a cropped image with an enlargement of the face…

Note also that at the bottom of post in the image tweeted by @Himbotomy we can see that it was signed by a Ben ‘polyhead’ Smith KE7GAL. KE7GAL seems to be a radio call sign, also called a call signal, call letters and call name. When operating a radio station, one is supposed to register for a license with the FCC (Federal Communications Committee) who assigns one a unique call sign.
On a ham radio website called HamQTH there is a profile for the call sign KE7GAL with the name Ben. Again, the call sign is unique for each operator. Under location, this profile has Portland, Oregon.
As we’ll see, the profile for Polyhead on LiveJournal has a location of Portland, OR and has a user pic of a cartoon bunny with a radio microphone and the keywords “radio bunny!”. We’ll see him post on social media about his interest in ham radio38.

As we’ll see, Polybun on Reddit wrote about growing up in Indiana39. Also, on his own polyhead.net, is seems he posted photos from his machinist “job in Indiana before moving out to oregon” and other photos concerning machining and metal-working40.
In a comment here on my Substack, a user by the name of KIFulgore was nice enough to call to my attention that there is a Ben Smith in yearbooks from the 1990s from the public school system in Seymour, Indiana. See, for example, page 212 of the high school’s 1994 yearbook showing a Ben Smith under the freshmen section. It seems to be the same person as the man in the photos we’ve seen above.
On page 145 of the 1995 yearbook, we see Ben Smith under sophomores.
On page 188 of the 1996 yearbook, under juniors, we see Ben Smith.

If Ben Smith was a junior in 1996 he was probably 17. 26 years passed between 1996 and the current year 2022. That would make him 43. As we’ll see, on November 28th, 2001, on Livejournal, Polyhead wrote, “yay.. i'm 23” and, “happy birthday to me”. Add the 20 years that pass between 2001 and 2022 and you have the age of 43.
On LiveJournal in 2003 Polyhead made an entry that confirms that he grew up in Seymour, Indiana. It links to a LiveJournal entry by a friend who refers to Polyhead as Ben who this person says moved to Portland by 2001.

This piece by the Daily Dot reports that the account called poly bun on Youtube was Benjamin J Smith’s. They just expect the reader to believe them. This does not mean that they are wrong, of course. If one searches poly bun now, it seems that Youtube account has been “terminated for violating YouTube's Community Guidelines.” However, there are archives of an account by this name going back to February 24th, 2022 and the twoarchives taken before the account was terminated do not show that this account was subscribed to Andy Ngo as we’ll see some claim. It seems like it is trying to load more but it does not. Note that the account was terminated a few days after the shooting.

Here are archives of that website. When it was registered in 2001, Smith was 22. It seems to have initially been concerned with music from the world of anime. He would show interest in anime on other platforms as we’ll see41. He posted some of what is apparently his poetry, such as this. There was a thread about gay marriage but I can’t access the content of that thread.
I did a reverse image search for one thumbnail and found this higher resolution image for one of the thumbnails…

The most recent archive of polyhead.net is from August 4th, 2010. Not much had changed, it seems.
2001-2011 POLYHEAD ON LIVEJOURNAL
Let’s look at the LiveJournal entries which span from 2001 when he would be about 22 to 2011 when he would be about 32. Given that this person seems to be interested in such things, the name Polyhead is apparently derived from polyhead engines, also known as polysphericle engines.
Here is Polyhead’sLiveJournal. Here is Polyhead’s profile on LiveJournal (archived here). Notice the cartoon bunny. This person sometimes referred to themselves as “polybunny” and “polybun”. It would seem that this is the same person who went by polybun on Reddit, poly bun on Youtube, Ben “Polyhead” Smith KE7GAL from Polyhead.net and so on. Also, note the profile links to Polyhead.net.
Note that this birthdate would mean that this person was 43 years of age at the time of the shooting. This is corroborated by an entry we will see below on November 28, 2001. Note also that the profile location is Portland, OR.

September 23rd, 2001 - His first entry. He writes about starting his LiveJournal in part to help satisfy his need to vent his anger. He also writes about motorcycle rides in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. He also writes that he very much likes Portland and the NorthWest. Finally he writes that he plans to rant about anime. He makes many spelling errors.

In this post he expresses anti-government, anti-authoritarian, anti-American and anti-censorship views. Ironically, it seems the authorities confiscated his guns.

These characters are female. But, as we will see, in later posts over the years, he seems to express antipathy to pedophiles. Also, we’ll see some posts that indicate he is sexually and romantically attracted to men.

October 3rd, 2001 - Apparently this person is quite capable of violence (or at least they claim so). In this post he describes beating up 2 men he calls “punk A” and “punk B”.
October 23rd, 2001 - This entry makes it apparent that this person is attracted to men. Apparently, the NGE stands for Neon Genesis Evangelion which apparently is a mecha anime television series that includes the underage character Rei Ayanami mentioned above.
This entry also tells us a bit about his mental health at the time…

September 24th 2003 - he posted links to some photos and wrote, “Those are some pictures of my former indiana adress. It was abondon a lil less than a year after i moved away.” One of the links goes to a LiveJournal entry by one of his friends, apparently. He writes,

My friend lived just outside of town with his family. I spent a good deal of time there between my junior and senior years of hs. I met ben in 1999 and he had moved by 2001. Polyhead commented on this that he misses the house. The friend refers to Polyhead as Ben who this person said moved to Portland by 2001.

One of the bookmarks is for XYMagazine which seems to be a magazine for gay men. An other book mark is for www.bushorchimp.com which now goes to a housewares website but which, in September 2005 looked like this.
A babyfur is a member of the furry fandom who enjoys roleplaying as younger characters. They may also be an Adult Baby and/or Diaper Lover (collectively known as AB/DLs), or is otherwise involved in Infantilism. There are many different types of furs in the babyfur community, each focusing on different aspects and roles.
October 15th, 2005 - This mentions “cubby suplies” (sic) which has to do with being a babyfur. This also mentions diapers. Also, he writes about wanting to cuddle with a man.
October 26, 2005 - He posted a link to a Huffington Post article by Cenk Uygur of the Young Turks, both mainstream left sources, about how religion is foolish. Polyhead added, “if yo don't agree, your ignorant.”
October 27th, 2005 - More about being a furry. Also, he refers to someone as a “conservative dick”. He writes that political correctness is a “sham” and “bullshit”. He writes that someone else is “a little too conservative”. He also expresses some progressivist views.
January 3rd, 2006 - This is about mental health problems. He also expresses anger about some furry being a pedophile.
January 18th, 2006 - In this entry, he is expressing his social and mental problems. He titled it, “I should stab my roomates”. A couple of years later he would complain that his roommates were no longer close with him. A few years later, he seemed surprised that his roommates moved out without notifying him.
February 12th, 2006 - More furry stuff. He also uses and misspells the term “faggets” in a derogatory way.
May 21, 2006 - In the first entry of the day, he expresses opposition to religion. He also mentions diapers. In the 2nd, he continues to slam religion. In the 3rd, he mentions bicycling and ham radio.
August 16th, 2006 - He posted a video that appears to show some “hillbillies” confronting a more urban kind of man and getting put in their place by the man. Polyhead titled this entry “This is what i think of when i htink of Texas”
In his second entry on this day, he complains that a furry named Wolfspawn is a “cubfucker too” by which he means that this furry is a pedophile.
August 19th, 2006 - He posted a video of a rocket launch that ended in disaster and wrote, “fucking hell is right, listen to them running away, heh.”
September 6th, 2006 - This is an other anti-religion, specifically an anti-Christian entry. He also mentions being a machinist. This has to do with the Nazis, Jews, Christians and technology. He wrote…

If you think that was a pro-Nazi quote then know this too - you’re too emotional and not rational enough to be correct about these things and you must be wrong about a lot of other things as well.
October 5th, 2006 - This is about this guy trolling some furry/plushy person.
January 2nd, 2007 - This person talks about moving to Canada. This is apparently a pro-progressive liberal entry as he writes “look how progresive canada is!” and that he wants to move to Canada.
February 6, 2007 - The link in this entry leads to a CNN article about backlash from gay rights groups over a Super Bowl add that, “showed two men accidentally kissing” each other and then asserting their manhood to assert their heterosexuality. This might appear to be anti-gay to some (he writes, “stupid fucking faggots”) but note that, as we saw above, this person is or was apparently in love with a man.
September 12th, 2007 - This entry is a rare case of something directly political from this guy. He criticizes Bush. One would imagine that he is also against Republicans in general.

What i really miss is having roomates that cared abuot me. I mean, we use to get along here, i dunno wht happend. They stopped talking to me, and started talking about me, i don't know why. I'm not perfect, i get angry, i'm a bit mental, yea, i know, they knew already too. They use to understand, now they forgot. I want to move back into that. I want to get to cook dinner for people again. I want to get to come home to a hug and a smile. It was nice while it lasted.

2005-2020 POLYBUN ON ANTHROCHAT
We will now look this Anthrochat IRC network's Journal with the “14 most recent journal entries recorded in Anthrochat IRC network's LiveJournal”. It runs from October 1st, 2005 to April 11th, 2020 and has only two entries from Polyhead.
On June 15th, 2009, Polyhead posted what seems to be an imaginary conversation between two furry characters, I suppose, having beastial cybersex. The second post is that which we saw in his LiveJournal entry for April 24th, 2011. That’s all there is from Polyhead in this chat, as far as I am aware.
2001-2011 POLYBUN ON REDDIT
We will now look at Polybun on Reddit. Note that whereas Polyhead’s activity on LiveJournal spanned from 2001 to 2011, Polybun’s activity on Reddit spans the last few years. It was not presumed that the person behind Polyhead on LiveJournal is the same person as whoever is behind Polybun of Reddit. Only after seeing the undeniable commonalities have I come to the view that this is almost surely the same person.
For example, in one comment on Reddit about four years ago, he wrote, “Uh... the name is Ben.. nice to meet you though.” Also, if one compares, one can see the same interests, personality traits, social dispositions, spelling errors and so on with some exceptions; Polybun on Reddit doesn’t talk about furry stuff as far as I can see, or diapers. But he’s still into the same kind of cars with polyhead engines, he was doing the the samekind of macinist work, he was still into guns and gun freedom and so on. It is almost surely the same person.
Again, some have argued that this man became right-wing/conservative in recent years. I have seen nothing here to even suggest that. Not only does it seem like the same person, but it also that this person has changed much. We’ll see him argue that the LBGTQ community should reject religion as he does, write that he wears panties, comment about his experiences at the hedonistic, clothing-optional Burning Man festival, refer to himself as “queer” and so on. These are not exactly the words of a right-wing conservative.
Being that he places a high premium on liberty, that he is anti-authoritarian, anti-religion, openly “queer”, proud to say he wears panties and so on, it seems Polyhead/Polybun would be in the libertarian-left quadrant of the political compass, at least culturally and morally.
On Reddit, posts and comments are dated as being from “1 year ago” or “2 years ago” and so on without any more specificity unless it is a matter of days.

Smith’s family, roommate, and neighbors told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Monday that he’d often rant about Black Lives Matter and other protests occurring around the city, homeless people picking through trash on his apartment complex’s property and living near the park and the recent COVID-19 mask and health mandates. He was known to collect guns and boast about his firearms and wasn’t shy about displaying them, sometimes threatening homeless people who ventured on his apartment complex’s property, his roommate and neighbors said.
One might assume that only right-wingers oppose BLM. However, if multiple reports are accurate, there’s been a decline in support for BLM in the last couple of years so that now the level of support for BLM is significantly lower than the level of support for the left-wing in general. This would mean that there are left-wingers who do not support BLM.
Also, consider that Kyle Rittenhouse said he supports BLM or at least he did at the time of this interview. In other words, support for BLM or lack of it does not neatly correlate with the left and the right.
On February 22, OPB published an article about the incident which reads in part…

Smith’s brother, Aurthur Killion, said Smith had had issues with protesters in the neighborhood but otherwise seemed fine when they last spoke a week ago. Killion, who learned about the shooting and his brother’s alleged involvement when a reporter contacted him, said he hasn’t been able to find out any more details.
Smith was also embroiled in a leak of private messages among the adult costume play community known as Furries. Leaked messages show Smith made anti-Semitic remarks and expressed support for the Proud Boys and Nazis.
As we saw, he did write plenty of anti-Semitic comments. But, as we saw, he wrote that Nazism “sucks”. This is bad reporting, to put it mildly. Also, the article mentions the homophobic slur but did not that he is gay! Tisk! Tisk!

Recall that we looked for evidence that he is a fan of Andy Ngo and could not find it. In fact, I have written a piece going into detail about how they lied about Ngo in relation to the incident and Smith (which is nothing). I have seen nothing to confirm the claim that he sells ghost guns.
They also write that the furry community “has a history of alt right ties” despite falling “across the political spectrum” and offer a Rolling Stone article about it from 2017. It’s, well, interesting but hardly relevant insofar as the quest to establish Smith’s political views goes. It seems they are trying to say, “Some furries are alt-right, so Smith is alt-right because he’s a furry. But furries span the political spectrum.”
The image is allegedly a screenshot from what is allegedly Smith’s Youtube account.
I can find nothing to confirm this so far. Screenshots can easily be forged. In fact, as we saw above, one can look at the archives of his Youtube account and see a lack of any evidence that he subscribed to Ngo as the above claims.
But this was propagated by people who should know better. For example, blue check-marked Michael Edison Hayden, “Senior Investigative Reporter and Spokesperson” for the SPLC, with 32,000 followers on Twitter, tweeted…
If you don’t know, Antifa particularly hates Andy Ngo. They have physicallyattackedhimmultipletimes, and some defend these attacks43, but have never once been attacked or even struck by him.
They lie about him, even mainstream sources lie about him, saying that he is a Nazi and that by tweeting mugshots of arrested rioters, he is tweeting hitlists for Nazis. In my other report on the shooting, we see that some Antifa claim that Ngo instigated the shooting.
Though @Johnnthelefty says it’s not important whether or not Smith is a homeowner, these folks obviously do think it is important because they mention it often enough. We saw, he apparently rented an apartment in an apartment complex that was along the march route. But, does that matter?
There is no evidence that Ngo did anything other than report and, again, there is no evidence that Smith followed him. There is no evidence that Smith was influenced by Ngo either.
The man accused of a mass shooting in Portland, Oregon reportedly commented on one of Andy Ngo’s YouTube videos in the past month, writing “This is why you arm yourselves folks.”

They made some serious claims there and that requires some valid evidence. They offer nothing but images and claims, both of which can easily be made-up. I can only conclude that these people are politically-motivated liars.

Farley has 30,000 followers on twitter and is apparently, a “journalist…covering extremism, policing & the arts” for “Playboy, VICE, SPIN,” and “Rolling Stone.” He claims to have spoken with people “who used to be close to Ben Smith” and he is using them as sources regarding Smith. He is agreeing with the initial tweet we saw from @Johnnthelefty above.

After reviewing his social media content, the claims about hate groups and about being “alt-right adjacent” seems to be made-up. He did, however, specifically express opposition to Nazis as we saw.
CONCLUSION
It could be true that this man swung from left to right. However, the huge hay stacks of evidence I combed through straw by straw yielded only a small pile of content related to the political divide and that content did not show him to have ever been a right-winger, a conservative or a patriot.
Ultimately it seems the claims that he became a right-winger are based on the simple-minded and binary view that if one opposes the terrorism of people who say they are anti-fascist then one must be a fascist. For those of us who can think their way out of a paper bag, this is as bone-headed as the view that if you oppose the dictatorship of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, you must be against democratic republics.

Socially and Culturally speaking, he is far from conservative. While these days, being openly gay is not necessarily an aspect exclusive to the left-wing, it is still more indicative of being left-wing. This applies to many of his other views and interests such as those with regard to religion, alternative lifestyles, what he calls “rednecks” and “Podunk America” and more.

Does that mean that he now opposes the left? Over the years he’s been openly against right-wing-conservatism, against Christianity and against religion in general. It is clear in this comment that he was rejecting religiosity on the left. It is not clear that he was rejecting the left as a whole.
It is necessary for the reader to understand that political views do not come in just left vs right. That is one dimension. There is also the authoritarian vs libertarian dimension. There are authoritarian conservatives/right-wingers like those who want the church and the police to have power and authority over society. There are authoritarian left-wingers such as communists and others who want a left-wing government to have power society. There are libertarian right-wingers who are culturally more conservative and who want authority to have little to no power over society. There are libertarian left-wingers who are very non-traditional but who also want authority to have little to no power over society.

One would imagine that not many right-wingers/conservatives go to a clothing-optional freak-festival with open-sexuality for all colors of the rainbow, paganism, a strong focus on drugs and alternative genders and lifestyles. He would heavily criticize it as he does with almost everything else, but his were anti-authoritarian and anti-religious critiques, not right-wing/conservative critiques.
Note that while some claim that Ben Smith is far-right because he belonged to far-right discussion groups on Telegram, as I show in the main body, these discussion groups can not even be characterized as right-wing at all, let alone far-right. On August 28, 2021 at 11:38, someone (not Ben Smith) posted a meme that expresses the view that Jews secretly conspire to rule the rest of humanity. It should be noted that being anti-Jew is neither left nor right. For example, some leftists go further than stating that Israel should stop killing Palestinian children to being blatantly anti-Jew.

In a LiveJournal entry for November 28th, 2001, he wrote that he was 23 which he would be if he was born on that day in 1978.
